Hvar is an island, S from Split, is famous in Croatia for having the most sunlight. The waters are a perfect blue, the locals are friendly and the 13th century architecture offers a great surprise to visitors who come from Split, only two hours away. It is the most relaxed town in Croatia where even the tourist information lady sits outside on the waterfront, instead of her office.

From the bus station, head W 20m through the market, which leads to Trg Sv Stejepana. This is the center of Hvar. Further west is the Fabrika along the sea, while Riva is S at the sea front.

From Trg Sv Stjepana, head west on Fabrika until you come to Hotel Delfin. The cinema is behind the hotel. In summer, every Friday night has an open air cinema showing which draws the whole town.

Holidays/Festivals
June - September: 'Hvar Summer Festival'. Performances by Croatia's best known classical music performers, and amateur groups from Hvar.
July - Hvar:
Visual Arts Moment - The Hvar branch of the Croatian Institute has regularly organised cultural and artistic events, classical music concerts, exhibitions (Hvar Visual Arts Moment) and lectures by well-known Croatian artists and scientists.

5 expensive hotels along the seafront in Hvar, but easily the best deal is private accommodation. There are many signs displaying the 'rooms, sobe, zimmer' outside of the houses. Rooms are cheaper here than any other place mentioned in Croatia.

r Samostan Berediktinki: Matija Ivanica. M-Sa11.00-19.00. Wine. From Trg Sv Stjepana head north on Matija Ivanica up the hill. Bring your own bottle. They also sell a bottle. Not a restaurant but a great place to go. 10KN/litre,
r Caffe Jazz: ul Diljana godinovic. 9.00-13.30, 18.00-02.00. Snacks. From Trg Sv Stjepana, head south on Riva then instantly turn east on Diljana godinovic.Finding this place is half the fun Tiny bar, with a few tables filled with tourists around 22.00, as it is one of the few places in Hvar that stay open.
r Pape: Riva #16. 10.00-15.00, 17.00-24.00. Seafood and Pasta. From Trg Sv Stjepana, head S on Riva just past the Slavija Hotel then head E.. Not cheap but excellent freshly court seafood and excellent service (usually they give you a free alcoholic drink if you stay and talk to them). The view on the terrace is one of the best in town. The menu is not decided until the fishermen come in with their catches. That's how fresh it is.
r Hotel Delfin: 19.00-21.30. Italian. From Trg Sv Stjepana, head W on Fabrika along the sea for 200m. Excellent 45KN value meal that includes soup, salad, a choice of 5 main courses. Incredibly popular restaurant, that is the best value dinner in all of Hvar.

Sight

S1 Venetian Fortress: From Trg Sv Stjepana head north on Matija Ivanica which takes you directly to the fortress. 9.00-20.00 daily. 10KN. This fortress dominates over the city. The 13th century structure rises high above the town, and is the most popular tourist attraction on the island. Inside the fortress is also a popular nightspot open every night 10.00-05.00. This disco is considered the best place to be in Croatia on New Years Eve and the locals said more than 10,000 people were in the fortress on December 31, 1999.
S2 Fransican Monastery: 8.00-20.00. From Trg Sv Stjepana, head south on Riva. Keep following this road south until you come to the Monastery. The monastery situated on the cove of Hvar has an excellent view of the surrounding sea. Inside are portraits of the last supper by Matteo Ignoli. The chapel holds many shows for the Hvar Summer festival.
S3 Riva street: From Trg Sv Stjepana, head south on Riva. This street is where the rich dock their yachts and proceed to the nearest trendy cafe. Known by the locals as the 'Italian playground' this strip is a great place to buy a coffee and just watch the rich.
